When the Walls Remember: The Uneasy Allure of Montanora

When the Walls Remember – Beneath the snow-capped peaks of a forgotten country called Montanora, whispers travel faster than the wind.
They curl through cobblestone alleys, rattle through iron gates, and—if you’re unlucky—slip into your home.

In my latest horror novella, Unwelcome in the Walls, the journey begins with hope. A young couple, their 7-year-old son, and their 2-year-old daughter arrive in the secluded town of Angel Cliff, eager to turn an abandoned stone estate into a wellness retreat. The roses are overgrown, the wrought iron is weathered, but the house feels like it’s waiting—perhaps even listening.

Then the listening turns to answering.

It starts small:

  • A snake coiled under a child’s pillow.

  • Whispering voices, doll-sized but cruel, threading through the wallpaper.

  • The family dog, gone cold in the garden.

But Montanora’s folklore warns of a place called The Thirsty Hill, and in Angel Cliff, nothing stays buried, not the dead, not the truth and certainly not the past.

As the nights grow stranger, the family learns the walls have their own memories… and some memories refuse to let go.

Unwelcome in the Walls is not just a horror story, it’s a descent into the places we think we can claim, only to discover they’ve claimed us first. It’s about the fragility of safety, the hunger of old houses, and the quiet, unsettling possibility that you might be the trespasser.
